Eponychium

Eponychium refers to the thin band of tissue at the proximal (near the body) end of the nail plate, which is often colloquially equated with the "cuticle". In reality, the eponychium is a living tissue and part of the nail fold, while the "cuticle" is the dead tissue located on the nail plate.

The eponychium forms a protective barrier by sealing the transition between the skin (nail wall) and the nail plate. In this way, it prevents bacteria, fungi or other pathogens from penetrating the nail root and causing infections. Careful care - for example, gentle pushing back with a suitable instrument after soaking - is important to keep the eponychium healthy and avoid nail problems.
