Flexible flatfoot

With a flexible flatfoot (Latin pes planovalgus), the heel tilts inwards while the longitudinal arch sinks. In children up to about the age of 8 this is very common and usually a normal developmental phase that corrects itself.

When to treat?

In adults, or if pain, rapid fatigue or unusual shoe wear (heavily worn on the inside) occur, the foot should be examined by an orthopaedist. If left untreated, a flat foot can develop.

What helps?

  • walking barefoot and foot exercises strengthen the muscles
  • stable shoes with a firm heel counter
  • insoles prescribed by a doctor if needed
