Mycological examination

In a mycological examination, a sample of skin or nail is tested for fungi in a laboratory. It is important because thickened, discoloured nails are not always nail fungus – nail psoriasis, onychauxis or pressure damage can look similar.

How does it work?

  • A doctor (usually a dermatologist) takes nail clippings or skin flakes.
  • Microscopy: provides a quick first indication.
  • Fungal culture: identifies the type of fungus but takes about three to four weeks.
  • PCR test: detects fungal DNA and is faster.

Good to know

No antifungal should be applied for some time before the sample is taken, otherwise the result may be falsely negative. During foot treatment we are often the first to notice changes in the nails and then recommend a medical check. More in our guide Nail fungus.
