Tuning fork test
In the tuning fork test, a struck, graduated tuning fork (Rydel-Seiffer) is placed on a bony point – usually the big toe joint or the inner ankle. The person says when they can no longer feel the vibration. The result can be read precisely on a scale from 0 to 8.
What is the test for?
Vibration sense is often the first to be affected by neuropathy. The test therefore helps to detect nerve damage early – for example with diabetes. It is usually carried out together with the monofilament test.
What does the result mean?
A reduced value shows that the feet need special protection: daily foot checks, suitable shoes and regular podiatric treatment. More in our guide Diabetic foot.
