Gout (podagra)
Gout is a metabolic disease in which there is too much uric acid in the blood. It is deposited as crystals in the joints, where it triggers severe inflammation. The first gout attack very often affects the base joint of the big toe – this is called podagra.
Signs of a gout attack
- sudden, very severe pain – often at night
- joint red, swollen and hot
- even the weight of the duvet is unbearable
Triggers
- purine-rich food (meat, offal, seafood)
- alcohol, especially beer
- sugary drinks
- fasting, dehydration
What to do?
A gout attack needs medical treatment. In the long term, an adapted diet and – if necessary – medication to lower uric acid help. Please no foot treatment during an acute attack; afterwards we are happy to treat pressure points on changed joints.
