Raynaud’s syndrome

In Raynaud’s syndrome, the small arteries in the fingers or toes go into spasm in attacks – usually triggered by cold or stress. The skin typically changes colour in three phases: white (no blood flow), blue (lack of oxygen) and red (rewarming).

Forms

  • primary: no identifiable cause, usually harmless, common in young women
  • secondary: as a result of other diseases, e.g. rheumatic diseases – should be checked by a doctor

Tips for the feet

  • keep feet warm: wool socks, lined shoes that are not too tight
  • no hot-water bottle or radiator directly on the feet
  • avoid smoking – it narrows the blood vessels
  • care for the skin well and watch out for small injuries
