Glossary
Chilblains (perniones)
Chilblains (perniones) are inflammatory swellings of the skin that occur after cold and damp – even at temperatures above freezing. They appear mainly on the toes, fingers, heels and ears.
Signs
- bluish-red, doughy swellings
- itching and burning, especially when warming up
- in severe cases blisters or small wounds
Who is at risk?
People with circulatory disorders such as Raynaud’s syndrome, young women, slim people and anyone who spends a lot of time outdoors – for example in winter shoes that are too tight or with damp socks.
What helps?
Keep feet warm and dry, do not buy shoes too tight, warm up slowly (not on the radiator!), care for the skin. With open areas or diabetes, please see a doctor. More tips in our guide Dry feet in winter.
