Keratolytic
A keratolytic is an active ingredient that softens and removes keratinised skin (hyperkeratosis). Well-known examples are salicylic acid, lactic acid and urea in higher concentrations.
Where are they used?
- callus and fissure ointments
- corn plasters and tinctures
- wart remedies
- psoriasis preparations
Caution!
Corn plasters containing salicylic acid attack not only the callus but also the healthy skin around it. With diabetes, circulatory disorders (PAD) or nerve damage they are off-limits – poorly healing wounds can develop. It is safer to have corns removed by a podiatrist.
