Hallux valgus
A hallux valgus is a deformity of the big toe (hallux) in which it leans towards the outside of the foot and the metatarsophalangeal joint protrudes inwards. This deformity is often referred to as a bunion.
Causes:
- Genetic predisposition
- Incorrect footwear (shoes that are too tight, high or pointed)
- Incorrect loading of the foot (e.g. due to flat feet or splay feet)
- Osteoarthritis or rheumatic diseases
Symptoms:
- Protrusion of the bunion on the inner edge of the foot
- Pain and inflammation in the joint
- Calluses or pressure points due to friction in the shoe
- Restrictions when walking
Treatment options:
Conservative:
- Orthopaedic insoles for relief
- Night splints or toe orthoses
- Physiotherapy & foot exercises to strengthen the muscles
- Comfortable, wide shoes with soft soles
Surgical:
- For severe complaints or restrictions
- Various surgical techniques to correct the deformity
