Hallux valgus

A hallux valgus is a deformity of the big toe (hallux) in which it leans towards the outside of the foot and the metatarsophalangeal joint protrudes inwards. This deformity is often referred to as a bunion.

Causes:

  • Genetic predisposition
  • Incorrect footwear (shoes that are too tight, high or pointed)
  • Incorrect loading of the foot (e.g. due to flat feet or splay feet)
  • Osteoarthritis or rheumatic diseases

Symptoms:

  • Protrusion of the bunion on the inner edge of the foot
  • Pain and inflammation in the joint
  • Calluses or pressure points due to friction in the shoe
  • Restrictions when walking

Treatment options:

  1. Conservative:

    • Orthopaedic insoles for relief
    • Night splints or toe orthoses
    • Physiotherapy & foot exercises to strengthen the muscles
    • Comfortable, wide shoes with soft soles
  2. Surgical:

    • For severe complaints or restrictions
    • Various surgical techniques to correct the deformity
