Foot care during pregnancy: relief for tired feet

Swollen feet, sore heels and your bump in the way when trimming your nails? How your feet get through pregnancy comfortably.

During pregnancy your feet carry a little more week by week – and at the same time your body changes: hormones loosen ligaments and connective tissue, fluid is retained and your centre of gravity shifts. No wonder many pregnant women notice their feet more than usual.

Typical changes

  • Swollen feet and ankles, especially in the evening and in warm weather
  • The arch of the foot may flatten – sometimes you need half a shoe size larger afterwards
  • Sore heels and soles due to the extra weight
  • Your bump makes it difficult to reach your own feet

Tips for relaxed feet

  • Put your legs up as often as possible and avoid standing or sitting for long periods
  • Comfortable, flat shoes with good support and enough room – a size larger is fine
  • Keep moving: walks, foot circles, pointing and flexing your toes
  • Lukewarm rather than hot foot baths and a gentle foot massage in the evening
  • Compression stockings can help – discuss this with your doctor or midwife

Warning signs – please seek medical advice

Contact your doctor or midwife promptly if swelling increases suddenly and severely, one leg is swollen, red or painful on one side only, or swelling occurs together with headaches, visual disturbances or upper abdominal pain.

How we help

When your bump gets in the way, we take care of trimming your nails and treating calluses – professionally, hygienically and in a comfortable position. Treat yourself to a cosmetic foot care session as a little time-out; it’s also a popular gift for mums-to-be. Of course we also help with ingrown nails or other complaints during pregnancy.
