Summer feet: well cared for and healthy through the warm season
Sandals, walking barefoot, swimming pools: summer is peak season for your feet. With these tips they stay cared for – and you avoid blisters, athlete’s foot and sunburn.
In summer we love to show our feet – and we ask a lot of them: open shoes, long walks, hot sand and chlorinated water. With a little care, your feet will come through the warm season healthy.
The most common summer problems
- Calluses and cracked heels from sandals and walking barefoot
- Blisters from new shoes or straps that rub
- Athlete’s foot and nail fungus after swimming pools, saunas or sweaty shoes
- Swollen feet in the heat
- Sunburn on the top of the foot – often forgotten
Tips for relaxed summer feet
- Rinse your feet with cool water in the evening, dry well and moisturise
- Apply sunscreen to the tops of your feet and toes too
- Wear flip-flops in swimming pools and saunas
- Break in new sandals at home first; keep blister plasters handy
- Put your legs up in the heat and drink plenty
- Don’t wear flip-flops all the time – they offer hardly any support
Important with diabetes
Walking barefoot is off-limits with diabetes, even on the beach: hot sand or sharp stones quickly cause injuries you may not feel. More in our diabetic foot guide.
How we help
Before your holiday or sandal season, we get your feet into shape: removing calluses, trimming and caring for nails – on request with our cosmetic foot care and fresh nail polish. If you notice signs of nail fungus, we are happy to advise you.
