Pressure relief

Pressure relief is a central part of podiatry. Most calluses, corns and pressure points develop because one area of the foot is permanently subjected to too much pressure or friction. If only the callus is removed it comes back – if the pressure is also reduced, the area stays free of complaints for longer.

Options

  • felt and foam pads: individually cut, for short-term relief
  • silicone orthoses: custom-made for the toes, washable and long-lasting
  • toe separators and protectors for pressure between the toes
  • insoles and shoe modifications via an orthopaedic specialist
  • shoe advice: often the simplest and most effective step

Especially important with diabetes

For people with diabetic foot syndrome, pressure relief is the most important measure to prevent an ulcer. More in our guide The right shoe.
